Halloween Activities and Guidelines

Halloween Parade – Tuesday Oct 31 at 2:15
We hope you can join us for our annual Halloween parade.  Students will come out the front doors and then march to the back of the building to come in the back playground door. Please assemble along the sidewalk in front of the building, as well as the north sidewalk and then back around to the blacktop.  In the event we experience inclement weather, we will hold the parade in the two gyms.

Classroom Parties – Tuesday Oct 31 at 2:30
ONLY those parents assigned to volunteer and students will return to classrooms for Halloween parties.

  • Please only school appropriate costumes, no masks or weapons.  Costumes should be brought to school in a bag to change into just before the parade begins.
  • All treats must be in accordance with the pre-approved food list and are being coordinated by room parents.
  • Please remember no parking is permitted in the fire lane in front of the school building during Halloween activities, as it is a designated bus-loading zone.

Westfield Elementary Dedicates Park Programming Center

On Thursday, August 31, Westfield Elementary School dedicated the new Park Programming Center, a space in the school’s library that will be used to teach students coding and programming skills.

The Programming Center is named in honor of Catherine Park, the mother of three CCSD 89 students. Catherine Park, 46, died unexpectedly during a family vacation in Costa Rica in 2016. Her family made a $22,000 donation to provide opportunities for all students to learn more about the field she worked in. Read the full article here.

Classroom Assignments

In order to protect student privacy, Community Consolidated School District 89 will no longer be posting class lists outside any of our elementary school buildings. Instead, the District will be mailing a letter to each family. That letter will include the name of the student’s classroom teacher and room number.

The letters will be put in the U.S. mail on Monday, August 7, and should be received within a few days. If you do not receive a letter by August 14, please contact your school for more information.

Winter Weather Reminders

Please send students in warm outer gear. In order to play in the snow at recess, students are required to have boots, snow pants, gloves, hat, and a winter coat. Otherwise, they remain on the blacktop to play so as not to get wet and be cold the remainder of the day.

Students will be outside at bus stops, as well as before school during arrival, and during lunch so long as the combined temperature and wind chill factor have a ‘feels like’ result of 10° or higher.

Weather.com is our source when keeping an eye on these guidelines.

Cub Scout Service Project – Crayon Recycling!

The 2nd grade Wolf den of Cub Scout Pack 246 are collecting crayons for SCARCE (School & Community Assistance for Recycling and Composting Education) in Glen Ellyn.

The Super Crayon project diverts broken, unusable crayons from going to the landfill. SCARCE recycles crayon pieces into “Super Crayons.” The scouts will help peel and sort the broken crayons which will then be melted and poured into molds to form large Super Crayons in a variety of shapes which can be used by children with special needs.

If you would like to donate, there will be a crayon collection box located in the front office at Westfield. Thank you for your help!
